Ryan McKinley

My name is Ryan McKinley. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, and have experience with adolescents and young adults. I earned my Master’s Degree in Clinical Counseling from Augusta University. I also earned my Bachelor's Degree in History with a Certification in Secondary Education from Augusta University. I have a deep understanding of the DSM-5 TR diagnostic criteria from previous experience with mental health evaluations. My experience in the field, education, and training has allowed me to help clients demystify their diagnoses and apply practical coping skills to their specific needs. I believe in looking at each person on both the individual level and in the context of society.

My approach to counseling is rooted in a humanistic perspective with the use of interventions from research-supported therapies, like dialectical behavior therapy.  I believe in a humanistic approach that emphasizes both collaborative work with clients that respects their autonomy and recognizes that they should not only be the focus of the session but should also lead them. I believe that the client should lead sessions, so some sessions consist of a set topic and coping skills, while others may be casual discussions of life events while playing chess or other games. I believe that a mix of structured and unstructured sessions allows space for growth and introspection. Specific areas that I have experience working with are conflict resolution, managing anxiety, addressing executive dysfunction, and minimizing compulsive behaviors. I encourage collaboration with parents in the therapeutic process or supports that the client may have.

My goal for all clients is for them to feel safe, heard, and validated. My room is a welcoming and affirming space for all backgrounds, races, religions, sexual orientations, gender identities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and ages. Because I believe everyone should have access to therapy, I offer both in-office and telehealth therapy services.
